about

This was a tune I wrote during my years with The Shiz, the band I formed with my wife back in 2009. We had just spent our date night watching Edward Zwick’s Defiance, which was set during Nazi Germany’s occupation of Belarus in a theatre in Baton Rouge. I remember carrying a feeling of disgust in my belly on that 45 minute ride back to her hometown of Hammond, Louisiana. I was in contention with the human ego, and how often it chooses obliteration over leaving well enough alone. I had grown up in a loud, violent home, but we had just spent a couple of years living in a Buddhist retreat center in remote Colorado where the rinpoche’s had taken a good shot at convincing me that my aggression wasn’t going to save anybody...so I found myself struggling with this Hollywood depiction of a dynamic we seem to be living over and over again, in spite of ourselves. The feeling landed hard and the song was fully written, save two lines, by the time we reached Hammond. It used to be a raucous number with loud guitar licks, but for this record, I wanted it to feel more like a neighborhood block party.

lyrics

I don’t want to fight for freedom
Freedom is a right from birth
I don’t need to fight for money
See, a dollar don’t define my worth

I just want peace for my body
Peace of mind
Peace for my soul
Peace for humankind

I don’t wanna to have to fight for justice
It’s better from an open hand
I don’t wanna to fight for my power
Some people sit to take a stand

And I want peace for the seers
Peace for the blind
Peace for the seekers
Peace for humankind

Chorus
But we go at
Everything with a wrecking ball
Let’s all go down, tear the walls down, tear ‘em on down

I don’t want to fight for water
‘Cause abundance flows right from the sky
And why they make you fight for shelter
When the ground is soft and trees grow high

I don’t need to fight for knowledge
When wisdom seeds have long been sown
I’m not afraid to walk this journey
See I come into this world alone

But what I want is peace for my brother
Peace for his mind
Peace for my sister
Peace for humankind
