about

I wrote this for the people in my life who believed that the Black Lives Matter movement was racist, and who thought all acknowledgment of race was divisive, for those who saw identity politics as fundamentally invalid, and for those who still can’t see that a threat to one person’s dignity is a threat to that of all. I’m a firm believer that our inability to engage a racial reckoning is harming us all. I’m holding space for what Heather McGhee describes as “solidarity dividends.”

lyrics

Don’t ya get got
The great divide is an illusion
‘Til the world stops
Don’t be misguided by confusion

I’m talkin’ bout the politics of dignity
And living out the promise of humanity
It’s hard for me to preach without the sanity
Of the eagle-eye view
Where there’s no difference between me and you.
The great divide is an illusion.
(Don’t ya get got)
The great divide is an illusion.
(Don’t ya get got)

I see Dreamers preach
This land’s their land too
And Two Spirits teach
Make old wisdom new
And I sing to myself
They belong in this world

I see Judy Heumann
Oh, she fights for me
While thousands of houseless
Make homes in the street
And I sing to myself
They belong in this world

I tell you in the politics of dignity
We’re mapping out the promise of humanity
We can’t forget the view of basic sanity
Where in the eagle-eye view
There’s no differences.

I see every color
Watch their dollars die
We turn to the children
To be the ones to save our kind
And I sing to myself
We belong in this world
We belong in this world
