about

“Fly” was born as a looper song years ago when I was on tour after leaving the Buddhist community out in Colorado. I had just visited a friend who had found a lot of healing singing in the shape note community, and was really moved by the “purging” effect that wall of sound singing could produce in me. The song started to land when left her house in Athens, Georgia to head northwards to Cheshire, Connecticut, where I had a habit of hanging out whenever I needed creative incubation. This time, upon arrival at our hosts’ house, an eagle landed in their backyard, rested, and then flew away. There was a stunning grace in what was surely a casual transaction for the bird, and the mystery fused itself with the shape note hillsong of my friend. I was aware of my own prayerful solitude, the weight of my own selfishness, my yearning to grow into something wild, beautiful and free with a willingness to accept my failings unapologetically. I built the base of the loop with the simplest music I could conjur, and even surrendered to seed syllables in the middle of the song… Bringing this song to the piano after all these years has proven no less necessary than the prayer was the day the song was born. It’s an ode to the shadows and light of the humble freedom I long for us all to have a chance to embody. This one is my favorite.

lyrics

I am the eagle who glides on the wind
Touching down briefly in someone’s backyard
Only a glimpse of me ever remains
And my home is ever so far
So I must fly

I look to the moon when the daylight is lost
She is my pardon, she is my rest
Taking the carnage of my daily bread
Can leave me discouraged at best
But I am so high

And there are those who still sing in the hills
Sacred heart secretly raging for more
Tearing away at our mis-shapen will
Making the lesson the art
So I will sing

I hear there’s freedom lying within
That’s what they tell me, that’s what i’m told
Reaching for wisdom is one way to go
Different direction than most
But I am free
So be we fre
